I missed yesterday, so today has two posts. As mentioned previously, I’m working towards learning my flash. Before jumping to a ‘studio 3 point setup’, I want to master the on camera flash first prior to off camera flash. I’m learning about bouncing the flash so that on camera flash has the same quality light as soft box light. “Today’s” first attempt was fill flash on my little one. We went for a walk around the block and he was cute, planting a kiss on mom’s head and just hanging out there for awhile. Unfortunately, it was direct flash, but I tried to match the ambient light for a subtle fill effect. I still have a lot to learn, but the fact that I came close feels pretty good. Before I ask for ‘models’ to pose (generally, my wife and kids), I want to understand it a bit more. I tend to freeze up when dealing with a live subject and that fear has prevented me from trying. I may have to seek out a wig display or something to practice in all sorts of ambient lighting conditions and lighting arrangements. Additionally, with the advancements of the 600ex-rt flash, I’m working with e-TTL. I’ve seen several different lighting tutorials saying manual is the only way to go (i suppose that’s true for studio/controlled settings) and eTTL is the best way to go with all of the advancements. Now it’s time to figure it out by practicing more!
